REHYDRATION / NUTRITION MODULE

The rehydration and nutrition module is meant to function as a day care center for dehydrated and malnourished children. Diarrhoea is still responsible for nearly 1/3 of the child mortality. Children in disaster exposed to extreme temperatures, exacerbations and lack of food, are easy victims of infectious diseases, and special care is needed to save them. With the addition of a nursing module, the day care center can easily be converted into a hospital. The module is supplied with kitchen utensils, while the possibilities for heating is found in the kitchen module.

Staffing:

Community health nurse or nutritionist
Health assistant

The main function of the Rehydration/Nutrition Module:

• Assessment
- Frequency of malnourishment in the child population
- Frequency of diarrhoea

• Monitoring
- Under- and malnourishment of the children

• Objectives
- Hydration of the patient by means of cup and spoon, stomach tube or intravenous therapy
- Feeding of malnourished children

• Education
- Education of parents on Oral Rehydration Solution and nutrition
- Education of local health personnel

• Referral
- Sick children should be referred to the medical officer

The equipment includes the following:

- infusion
- hydration orally by stomach tube
- weighing scales
- food demonstration and feeding (combined with the kitchen module)
